Free Weekend Event in Houston’s East End Brings Art Battles, Murals, Lowriders, Artisans, and Music to Canal Street
The inaugural Buffalo Bayou Mural Festival (BBMF), October 18–20, 2024, brings together over 20 local and international mural artists for a celebration of creativity and community in Houston’s historic East End. This free weekend festival will transform Canal Street into a vibrant open-air gallery, drawing art lovers and tourists alike to experience live mural painting, art battles, local vendors, and music. Details and updates at buffalobayoumuralfestival.com
Houston’s own muralists will go head-to-head with international artists in the festival’s kick-off “Texas vs. the World” Art Battle on Friday, October 18, at The Tipsy Sloth on Navigation. The mural festival’s main focus will be on the exterior walls of Headquarters Houston at 3302 Canal St., where the 36,000-square-foot building and a neighboring structure will be transformed by the artists’ work, turning Canal Street into a must-see destination for public art enthusiasts.
“This is more than a mural festival; it’s about creating connections through art,” says Jose Arredondo (MEENR), festival curator and a renowned local muralist. “We’re bringing people together from all over the world to leave a permanent mark on Houston. Most important, this is an event by artists for artists.”
BBMF’s artistic line-up features prominent local talents, including Anat Ronen, Gelson D. Lemus (W3R3ON3), Franky Cardona, and Nicky Davis, and features a few well-known names outside of Houston, including Sofles (Australia), Thore (California), and Yolocone (Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Miami). A full list of artists is provided below.

For more than 20 years, MEENR has worked as a full-time artist in Texas, but his projects span the nation. In addition to Houston, his murals can be found in San Antonio and in other cities outside of Texas, as well as private collections and commercial projects for major clients like the NFL and RedBull. Some of his most recognized works in Houston include:
- “Rebirth” at East River: A 75-foot monumental mural commissioned for the East River development, depicting native flowers and plants bursting through a trompe l’oeil frame.
- KHOU-TV Murals at George R. Brown Convention Center: Wall-wide murals decorating the KHOU Avenida Studio, inside and outside, contributing to Houston’s vibrant downtown.
- Magnolia Park Mural Project: A community-driven mural honoring the 100-year legacy of Edison Middle School and celebrating the history of Magnolia Park.
- Railroad Art Alley: A collaboration with fellow artists, including Eduardo Herrera aka el Edu, where MEENR contributed to murals in this creative space.
