He received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1992, an MFA from the University of Houston in 1998, and a Fellowship from the American Photography Institute at Tisch School of Arts / New York University in 1998. Since 1994, Nelson has received numerous honors, grants, awards, and local media attention. ABOUT ALIEF ART HOUSE: Created as part of artist Matt Manalo’s DiverseWorks Project Freeway Fellowship, Alief Art House is a hub for creativity that highlights the cultural richness of the multiple communities in Alief. Known as the “International District,” Alief is considered a window into what Houston is becoming and is at the forefront of the city’s diversity.

A refurbished shipping container, Alief Art Houston is located on the grounds of the Alief Community Garden at the Alief SPARK Park and Nature Center. It houses art events curated and organized by Manalo in collaboration with other creatives who reside and work in Alief. Manalo’s vision is to create a sustainable environment for creativity, jumpstart an art-focused movement in the neighborhood, and positively impact Alief’s image.
