WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2024 at 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM: Houston Museum of African American Culture presents “Albums and Art: Box Set Listening Party & Happy Hour. ” Playing will be the two albums that accompany the two monographs of photographs by Michael Abramson, the subject of the exhibition on view “Pervs, Peppers, and the High Chaparral: Michael Abramson’s Chicago South Side Photographs.” Listen to music, browse the two books of Abramson’s photographs, sip some wine, and walk through the exhibition.

EXHIBIT ON VIEW FEBRUARY 2 – MARCH 30, 2024: “Pervs, Peppers and the High Chaparral: Michael Abramson’s Chicago South Side Photographs” captures the social scene of the South Side Chicago in 1970s. A selection of his vintage images have been curated by Christopher Blay for the Houston Museum of African American Culture.

Imagine Ernie Barnes’ Sugar Shack painting, but as photographs with a focus on the club patrons seated facing the dance floor and you get a pretty good sense of Abramson’s photographs from the South Side of Chicago in the mid-70s. A selection of these images are part of the HMAAC exhibition, which takes its title from some of the South Side clubs where Abramson photographed.

New York and the beautiful people had Studio 54. South Side Chicago had Perv’s House, Peppers Hideout, and The High Chaparral. These were the places to be at that time in that place. The clubs allowed the like-minded to openly express themselves and bend the rules and norms, even if just a bit.
