ART EVENT: “The Happening” at the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art

March 29 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)

Presented on every last Friday of the month, this experimental performance art and open mic showcase is curated by Alexandra Lechin — no two Happenings are ever the same! Note that the Orange Show Monument is closed for conservation and reconstruction, so The Happening events moved to the area between the monument and Smither Park as of March 29, 2024.

This month’s edition includes a performance that moves within a “stellar” family system and takes physical and philosophical cues from the practice of family constellation therapy and inspired by star gazing. “Lovingly burdening the constellation” features five women who attempt to maintain an equilibrium between enacting inherited roles and histories while embarking on personal journeys: Jeanette “Joy” Harris, Alicia Kahn, Elizabeth Newkirk, Katheryn Roberts, and Julia Claire Wallace.

Directed by Harris, this performance is accompanied by selections from Act One of Dylan Mattingly’s opera Stranger Love, commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, premiered on May 20, 2023. Special thanks to Dylan for providing tracks from the Contemporaneous performance.

“Lovingly burdening the constellation” is one iteration of Harris’ larger work INHERITANCE, a multi-disciplinary exploration of the movements and performances of relationships between singular and plural – their tension and compression; expansion and contraction; and extension and shrinkage. INHERITANCE looks at our deep desire for uniqueness in a world that both protects and prohibits its flourishing. It looks at this desire through two lenses: the private realm of family relationships where we inherit the stories of our ancestors and the public realm of political movements where we inherit ideologies.
