ART OPENING “40 Winks” and “Cherry” at Basket Books + Art

March 30 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

ON VIEW MARCH 30 – MAY 12, 2024: Basket Books + Art presents two solo exhibitions. “40 Winks” is a site-specific sculptural installation by Jillian Conrad, nylon string and brass rods held in suspension conjure an ephemeral architecture, extending Conrad’s exploration of the unseen. “Cherry” is a series of ten discrete, hybrid works by Fox Hysen, employing painting and collage, and each bound by an artist-made cherry wood frame. Grounded in landscape, this work began as a series of plein air watercolor sketches made during a recent trip to Umbria, Italy.

Jillian Conrad’s artistic practice addresses themes of materiality and intangibility. Her sculptures and works on paper look to landscape and the details of the physical world as thresholds that connect the human and the universal, the visible and the invisible. Her work has been exhibited at and supported by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Bronx Museum, Smackmellon, Socrates Sculpture Park, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program, Headlands Center for the Arts, The Core Program (at the MFAH, Houston) and Artadia. Recent solo exhibitions include The Earth as Air, Un Lieu Une Oeuvre, Ménerbes, France (2023), Hydras, BioScience Research Center, Rice University, Houston, TX (2022), and Airspace, Devin Borden Gallery, Houston, TX (2019). Conrad’s work has been reviewed and discussed in numerous publications including Artforum, Hyperallergic, Art Lies, and the New York Times. She is Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of the Sculpture Department at the University of Houston. A recent recipient of a Fullbright Fellowship, Conrad will, in the fall of 2024, travel to Cardiff University in Wales where she’ll be making drawings and sculptures inspired by research and encounters with the regions holy wells.
Fox Hysen was born in the Bay Area, California and currently lives and works in Norfolk, Connecticut. She is full-time faculty at the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting, the graduate program at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Her work explores the relationship between composition and bodily perception. The conventions of landscape, the linearity of writing, the abstract space of the grid and sensuality of organic and built forms are drawn in combination with her style of direct, gestural mark-making. Hysen’s playful and open-ended practice manifests in a variety of different types of painterly objects. The raw materiality of these objects are experienced in tension with their organization into readable spaces. Awards include the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2022 and the Tournesol Award at the Headland’s Center for the Arts in 2016. She earned her MFA from Yale University (2015) and BFA from NYU (2006). Most recently she has shown her work with Below Grand gallery in New York.
