Join curator Erika Mei Chua Holum and docent Nina Vukicevic for a conversational tour of “Flesh and Bone | John Guzman” followed by lunch.

On view through September 24, this is the artist’s first museum exhibition. It focuses on works produced in the artist’s hometown of San Antonio and the NXTHVN Studio Fellowship Program in New Haven, Connecticut. A markedly distinct spatial shift emerges in Guzman’s recent works, pointing to the link between the environment and its inhabitants in the artist’s exploration of new space, styles, subject matter, and attention to simple lines. Working in Connecticut, the artist continues to explore biomorphic forms, yet addresses the fragility and interiority of the psyche and altered landscapes. Throughout the work, Guzman visualizes inexpressible yet consequential conditions of suffering and, in so doing, articulates a departure from cyclical patterns of self-destruction becoming his own reality. “Flesh and Bone | John Guzman” is co-organized by Rigoberto Luna, an independent curator, and Erika Mei Chua Holum, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Assistant Curator at the Blaffer Art Museum.
The Blaffer Art Museum is open Tuesday–Friday, 10am–5pm and Saturday–Sunday, 12pm–5pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. Park in the Elgin Street Garage (4224 Elgin St.) or find nearby metered parking spots in Lot 16C.
