OPENING RECEPTION “Charis Ammon: Meanwhile” at Inman Gallery

May 3 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

MAY 3 – JULY 6, 2024: On view at the Inman Gallery, Charis Ammon’s canvases occupy the same space as the bouquets and cards they depict—when words are unavailable or feel inadequate, a painting gestures towards the feelings we carry. Her new suite of paintings explore quiet intimacies: buckets of flowers in bodega entryways, dewy raindrops on plastic sheaths for bouquets, HEB greeting cards waiting to be purchased, and closeups of socks, implying a private moment at home. The exhibition marks a transition from the artist’s previous grittier cityscapes and construction sites towards a softer subject matter. The imagery is still “in the city” – grocery stores, bodegas, flower shop storefronts – but the gaze has shifted to capturing public places that speak to private expressions, and city spaces that hold whispers of intimacy. By painting gifts and rituals that form around the in-between moments of life events – the “meanwhiles,” so to speak – Ammon captures the physical ways we communicate care. In their depiction of gesture, the works capture the joys, humor, and tenderness of sharing a life with others.

ARTIST TALK on SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2024 at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM: Painter Charis Ammon joins in conversation with writer Reid Sharpless at Inman Gallery to mark the opening of “Meanwhile,” the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. This artist talk will be held in person in the gallery and will be streamed live on Instagram (@inmangallery).

CHARIS AMMON (b. 1992) paints images she encounters as she moves through her urban landscape, and the scenes she chooses to paint are often defined by flux: construction sites, urban development, and concrete. The resultant paintings are fragments of Ammon’s lived experience, and they represent a marriage between the urban environment and our inner mental and emotional landscapes. Charis Ammon holds a BFA in Painting from Texas State University and an MFA in Painting from The University of Houston. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NYC.

REID SHARPLESS (b. 1992) is a Brooklyn-based writer from Texas. He earned his BA in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin in 2015, and his MFA in creative writing at Columbia University in 2021. His short fiction has appeared in The Baffler, is forthcoming in XRAY Literary Magazine, and earned an honorable mention in the 2023 Zoetrope: All-Story short fiction competition. He’s currently at work on a story collection and a novel.
