PERFORMANCE “Unearthing: Black Porosity” at Meive Art Gallery

June 8 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

PERFORMANCE: On Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, join artist-in-residence Rian Crane (he/they) for a Shoal Activation (7:00 PM to 7:30 PM) featuring Billion Tekleab and friends.

Billion Tekleab’s “This is not a performance” will take place as a hyperextension of “Unearthing: Black Porosity.” Tekleab is an Eritrean-American interdisciplinary artist based in Houston. To address the dispossession of self particularly occurring to Black people across the diaspora, Tekleab works through poetry, sculpture, performance, and sound. Her practice explores the materiality of objects dissembling wood and steel, and building with dirt and paint, seeking to make visible the experience of resistance, grief, joy, and softness. With permanence and sound, Tekleab embodies both storyteller and witness to these experiences.

EXHIBIT ON VIEW MAY 10 – JUNE 22, 2024: “Unearthing: Black Porosity” is a project on view at Meive Art Gallery by Rian (Raven) Crane that explores the relations of Black +/ Indigenous lifeways in the gulf/ global south through performance, sculpture, cyanotype, soundscapes, and cinema. Rian (he/they) is one of two recipients of Fresh Arts’ 2024 Space Taking Artist Residency (STAR). The opening reception features words by Rian followed by a screening of the film “On the Ocean” by director Dr. Chrystel Olokoi.
