ART EVENT “Dimensions Variable: A Journey through the Senses” at Moody Center for the Arts

April 13 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

APRIL 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Experience the exhibition “Hayv Kahraman: The Foreign in Us” through sight, sound, touch, and taste during this multisensory event. Guests can explore the galleries while enjoying a live performance of Persian music; taste a selection of torshi samples prepared by local chefs; and try their hand at paper marbling.

Drawing from thematic and technical elements found in Kahraman’s exhibition, this free art event encourages creative and interactive responses to the artist’s works. A paper marbling workshop, led by Austin-based artist Mercedez Rex, takes inspiration from Kahraman’s use of this technique in several paintings on view. Similarly, a presentation of torshi dishes prepared by local chefs highlights the artist’s use of the liquid from this fermented vegetable as a colorant in her work. A live performance of the kamancheh, a Persian string instrument, by musician Badie Khalegian celebrates a rich cultural tradition that alludes to the artist’s Iraqi-Kurdish heritage.

EXHIBIT ON VIEW JANUARY 12 – MAY 11, 2024: This installation of new and recent works by Hayv Kahraman is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Texas and includes major works informed by the artist’s Iraqi-Kurdish heritage and experience as a refugee while highlighting her research-driven practice. Through her profound imagery and investigation into the decolonization of the body and nature, Kahraman challenges fear and apprehension of otherness, advocating instead for compassion and acceptance.
