OPENING RECEPTION: “Creosote Stories: Seeding Planthroposcenes in Northeast Houston”

November 4 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

ON VIEW THRU JANUARY 11, 2024: “Creosote Stories: Seeding Planthroposcenes in Northeast Houston” features works by Willow Naomi Curry, Ginger Jeudy, Danny Russo, Ukombozi Fellows Chelsy Aledia, Nia Buckley and Kennedy Henderson accompanied by oral histories from Sandra Edwards, Walter Mallett, Dolores McGruder, Vivian McKlevy, and Joetta Stevenson.

Organized by the Houston Climate Justice Museum & Cultural Center, the opening reception also includes a reading from the book “Groundglass” by author Kathryn Savage followed by a conversation between Savage and Houston writer and artist Willow Naomi Curry to discuss the process of using personal stories to investigate brownfield and superfund sites, and the ways that stories can be used for critical inquiry.

“Groundglass” (2022) draws on Savage’s experiences growing up on the fence lines of industry and explores how past environmental actions reverberate across landscapes and in our bodies.
