ART EVENT “Goddess Night” by Tra’ Slaughter at Reeves Art + Design

April 5 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2024 at 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM: “Goddess Night is happening, so don your best goddess gear for a chance to win an original painting from artist Tra Slaughter’s “Goddess” collection on view now thru April 8, 2024 at Reeves Art + Design.

ON VIEW MARCH 22 – APRIL 8, 2024: “Goddess” is a solo exhibition featuring works by Tra’ Slaughter as well as a group exhibition curated by the artist; both exploring the variety of ways that the divine feminine can be interpreted and the notion that the strength of the gods is within us. In addition to Slaughter, artists from Houston, Austin, Dallas and New York City have created artworks — from figurative and abstract to sculpture, assemblage and more — that express an interpretation of the word “Goddess.”

In his solo exhibition, Slaughter presents works that focus on individual Goddesses. Each piece will represent a chosen goddess created in Slaughter’s beauty-meets-grotesque style. Exaggerated features such as the eyes and mouth are used to express the true emotions of the subject of each painting. Inner body parts are exposed – bones, organs and private parts are all made visible, signifying the vulnerability of each subject. Exposing every aspect of themselves to the viewer is both an expression of vulnerability and strength. This also creates a strong connection between the mythological goddesses and human women. It takes strength to reveal everything about oneself in such a bold presentation.

The subjects of these works go against the grain of societal norms. As a society, we have been taught that parts of the human body should be covered and kept secret from the rest of society. Sexual organs are viewed as taboo and discussed in hushed tones. The works in this collection strive to buck that system of thought and allow the viewer to see every aspect of the subject. Thus, providing the opportunity for a deeper connection to be made with the subject of each work. Some of the work in this collection includes text and messaging providing insight into who the subject was / is. The collection was made using a variety of mediums, including oil, acrylic, latex, charcoal and coffee creating rich textures and depth within each piece.
