OPENING RECEPTION “Light Persists: Selected Works, 2015–2020 by Anton Guatama” in O’Kane Gallery at UH Downtown

February 29 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

ON VIEW FEBRUARY 29 – APRIL 4, 2024: The O’Kane Gallery at University of Houston Downtown presents “Light Persists: Selected Works, 2015–2020 by Anton Gautama” that includes 26 large-scale photographs by the Indonesian artist (1969-2021). Emphasizing Gautama’s final project titled “The Outsider,” the exhibition also draws from two other series: “Pabean Passage” and “Home Sweet Home.” Starting in 2015, the artist began documenting his home city of Surabaya, Indonesia, which resulted in these three series that were separately published, yet are now recognized as a trilogy.

Gautama unexpectedly died in 2021 before the publication of “The Outsider.” “Pabean Passage” tells about a century-old market in Surabaya that was very memorable during his childhood. “Home Sweet Home” features Chinese-Indonesian home interiors in Makassar and Surabaya where he was born and raised. Focused on a dilapidated 300-year-old Dutch Colonial building in Surabaya, “The Outsider” offers a view to his life as an adult and the result of his lifelong rumination on life.

The building became a landing place and refuge for Chinese Indonesians in the 1940s following social unrest. Known as “Satan House” for its proximity to a cemetery and its menacing appearance, the building continues to house an ethnic mix of Indonesians surviving and resilient despite unfortunate circumstances.
