As one of L.A.’s most dynamic bands, Ozomatli was the natural choice to bring to life the hidden treasures of the Los Angeles Public Library’s sheet music archive. With selections hand-picked in collaboration with USC Professor Josh Kun, Ozomatli and its friends invite you to experience the rich musical tapestry of our city, and to rediscover songs that celebrate the hopes and dreams of L.A.’s future through its late 19th- and early 20th-century songwriters and visionaries. SCHEDULED GUEST ARTISTS: La Santa Cecilia, I See Hawks in L.A., Petrojvic Blasting Company, Ceci Bastida, Rob Gonzalez, Cheech Marin, and Jackson Browne.

This may be your last chance to visit Caine’s Arcade in East L.A.! Grab a “fun pass” and play Caine’s handmade, cardboard games. Caine is now turning 11 years old, and is considering an “early retirement.” While his arcade may be closing at his father’s used auto parts store, it may live on in new, unexpected ways. Join special guests and media crews to hear big news announced by Imagination Foundation.

OPENING: Video Installation by Kim Abeles
AIRS NIGHTLY from TWILIGHT to MIDNIGHT through FRI 8/16
TRACTIONARTS @ 821 Traction Ave, Los Angeles 90013
RSVP on Facebook
Celebrate the opening of Time-Line-Space by artist Kim Abeles and the closing of the video installation Transit by Zeina Baltagi. Founded by Ken Marchionno, TRACTIONARTS is a video “venue” in the Los Angeles Arts District — actually, it’s a window facing Traction Ave. at the corner of Avery St. that airs shows daily from twilight to midnight.
Originally created in 2010, Time-Line-Space is a video by Abeles to embed in the floor of the library entrance at the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools, which is located on the historical site of the Ambassador Hotel. It shows the people passing over the same spot through time. Flanking the video are 60 dioramas, castings, photographs and drawings about the site. Her installation is a permanent public artwork commissioned by the Los Angeles Unified School District for the school, which was designed by Gonzalez-Goodale and opened in 2010.
SUN 8/4 @ 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
BENEFIT ART AUCTION: Lance van Gils Celebration of Life
Eat.Drink.Americano @ 923 E. 3rd St., Los Angeles 90013
RSVP here on Facebook
Join family and friends of Lance van Gils for this community event to bid on artworks generously donated by nearly thirty local artists and collectors in the Arts District and throughout Los Angeles. His mother Christina Borraez is a designer who raised Lance and his sister Camille Lei Rodriguez in the Arts District. Recently, she has been teaching at Art Share L.A.
Confirmed artists (as of 7/31/13) include Kim Abeles; William Acedo; Scott Berg; Qathryn Brehm; Jaime Colindres; Gary Callahan; Jacqueline Daralsfy; Leah Doyle; Megan Garol; John Hale; Victoria Helena; Stacy Henning; Iva Hladis; Andrew Jefchak; George Joaquim; Emmeric Konrad; Tod Lychkoff; Lisa McDonnell; Deborah Meadows; Patricia Mitchell; Valerie Mitchell; Colette Miller; Rachael Neubauer; Raymond Newton; Henry Schwartze, Jr.; Tatiana Von Der Schulenburg; Taz; Chris Wettersten; Elizabeth Wild; and Gene Wyrick.
Music for the benefit art auction is generously provided by Los Angeles-based (and former Arts District resident) alternative violinist/composer David Strother and the Arts District’s own Devil Dogs featuring Jessie Easter, Alberto Miyares, and Emilio Pesquiera. There will be a poetry reading by Leah Doyle. In addition to participating artists and musicians, special thanks to Eat.Drink.Americano; Angel City Brewery, Roxy’s Doggy Day Care & Boarding; Taix French Restaurant; and collector Darrel Frank Loyd for their generous donations.
DONATIONS: If you have artwork to donate, contact Patricia Mitchell at (323) 715-1331 or via email HERE. Food and beverages are also needed and welcomed. While the venue was generously donated, the restaurant is closed for the day, so the event is being presented as “potluck style.” Cash, checks, and credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) will be accepted for art sales and donations. Donations may also be made online at Lance van Gils Memorial Fund. Proceeds will support the family’s costs for Lance’s memorial services, burial, and other needs related to this tragedy.
